Sun Microsystems Niagara 2 Processors
Description
Sun Microsystems Niagara 2 Processors
Sun’s UltraSPARC T1 processor was a huge success, and with good reason. Found in the Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers as well as SPARC Enterprise T1000 and T2000, it has proven itself in datacenters around the world. Built with 8 cores each and the ability to run 4 threads, it is a truly impressive chip. That’s not even mentioning the huge savings in power due to the UltraSPARC T1’s energy efficiency. Could it get even better?
Sun has demonstrated that it can. The new lineup of coolthreads processors, or Niagara 2 as they are named, have topped the T1 in many ways. The Niagara 2 chip features 8 cores allowing it to provide up to 64 threads per processor. Sun also aimed to offer 80% to 100% increase in energy efficiency as well, further aiding organizations in cutting down their power bills and carbon footprints. The Niagara 2 processor also features built in I/O and networking components effectively speeding up the entire computing process. It sounds impressive and hopefully will deliver much like the UltraSPARC T1 did. If you’d like more information on the UltraSPARC T1, T1000, T2000, or the Niagara 2 chipset, contact Acclinet today.
